D.H. Lawrence

Some things are worth repeating, as is this from D.H. Lawrence:
"Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into are awake through years with transferred touch, and go on glowing for long years.

And for this reason, some old things are lovely
warm still with the life of forgotten men who made them."
While we are so overly concerned with testing children, this should be the test for teachers and administrators in their qualifications. Do they know what it means and have they done something in their own lives to express and affirm it? I would prefer it be an essay test or a hand-made object expression of the concept rather than multiple choice which reveals nothing. You may recognize "with wakened hands" as the title of James Krenov's last book.
